FAMILY ARIIDAE

SEA CATFISHES

These fishes are easily recognized by large "whiskers" or barbels around the mouth (2-3 pairs) and their forked tail. Other features include an adipose (skin flap) second dorsal fin, bony plates present on top of head to near origin of the dorsal fin; and a large stiff spine at front of the first dorsal and pectoral fins; and a complete lateral line.

The family occurs in all tropical and subtropical seas and there are numerous freshwater (particularly in the Australia-New Guinea region) and estuarine dwellers as well. The eastern Pacific species are largely coastal fishes which frequent sand and mud bottoms of bays, harbours, and brackish river mouths; a few species range into deeper water and are seen in trawler catches. Freshly captured specimens should be handled with care as the sharp spines in front of the dorsal and pectoral fins are venomous. Fishermen often snap these off before untangling the fish from their nets. Their flesh is good eating and large numbers of catfishes are seen in fish markets throughout the region. Ariids feed on small fishes and a variety of benthic invertebrates, frequently shrimps, crabs, or molluscs.

Worldwide there are about 14 genera with over 139 species. There are 20 species in 7 genera that are found in our region.
