FAMILY HETERENCHELYIDAE

MUD EELS

Heterenchelid eels are highly modified for burrowing, headfirst; The have blunt heads, no pectoral fin, a large mouth with more or less equal jaws, no scales, gill openings low on the body, no lateral line, dorsal and anal fins that are low and confluent with the tail, and the dorsal fin origin over the gill opening.

This small family, which contains two genera and 8 species, is restricted to the tropical and subtropical Atlantic and eastern Pacific; there is one species in the eastern Pacific.
