FAMILY NARCINIDAE

ELECTRIC RAYS

These rays have a very flat and oval disc with moderately soft + edge composed of the head, trunk, and enlarged pectoral fins. The mouth is small and can be extended in a tube. There are two large, more or less equal-sized dorsal fins and the upper and lower lobes of the tail fin are continuous around the vertebral column. The skin is soft and loose, and lacks denticles or thorns. Their most noteworthy feature is he well-developed electrical organs that are derived from gill musculature and are visible as kidney-shaped mounds on either side of the head. These are used to stun prey and also probably act as a defensive weapon against enemies. In addition, the narcinids have an accessory electric organ (behind to the main electric organ) that produces low voltage discharges that may function in intraspecific communication.

Electric rays are generally sluggish fishes that occur in sandy or muddy areas. They sometimes conceal themselves by burying under the substratum. Young are born alive.

The family is distributed in all tropical and temperate seas and contains about 9 genera and 24 species. There are 3 genera and 5 species in the eastern Pacific, with 2 genera and 4 shallow living species in our region.
