Dogfish sharks

Sharks with cylindrical bodies, short snouts; 5 gill slits; moderate to large spiracles just behind eyes; eyes without nictitating membrane; teeth on lower jaw not much larger than those on upper, with strongly oblique tips; no anal fin; 2 dorsal fins with ungrooved spines, origin of the first well before the pelvic fins; tail base with a pair of keels and a pit above; skin with denticles.

This worldwide primarily subtropical to temperate family contains 2 genera and about 10 species.
